Yes! You must meet these 3 requirements:

1. Be 18 years or older
2. Have a High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)
3. Work at a licensed contractor company
4. Contractor company must be a current PHCC-IA member.

It takes around four years to complete the apprenticeship program as it is composed of two components. 8,000 on-the-job training hours and 576 related training instructions hours.

No, each year you are expected to complete 144 hours of classwork (about 18 days out of the year). The rest of the time you are working at your company, earning your wage and gaining on-the-job training hours.

PHCC of Iowa offers both in person and online apprenticeship options. We host in person HVAC apprenticeship classes in Des Moines, and we host both Plumbing and HVAC in Cedar Rapids. Our online apprenticeship is 100% online, so you may complete the classwork at home, at work, or wherever you may be!

Yes! Because apprenticeship includes hands-on, on-the-job training, you’ll gain essential skills while working in the field. To participate, you must be employed by a licensed contractor who is also a PHCC of Iowa member, ensuring you receive proper supervision and industry-recognized training.

No! The program is designed to fit around your work schedule, whether you choose the in-person or online program. Both tracks include 144 hours of classroom instruction per year (about 18 days) and 2,000 hours of on-the-job training to build hands-on experience.

For the in-person program, apprentices attend face-to-face classes during the first and last week of the academic year. Between those weeks, coursework is completed online while you continue working, earning wages, and gaining on-the-job training.

For the online course, the program is fully online and self-paced, allowing you to complete coursework on your own schedule. Most apprentices finish within 8–10 months while continuing to work and gain hands-on experience through on-the-job training.
