PHCC of Iowa In-Person Apprenticeship Program
At PHCC of Iowa, our mission is to empower individuals to uncover the potential of apprenticeships within the plumbing-heating-cooling trades. Our in-person apprenticeship program provides a distinctive combination of hands-on training and classroom instruction, giving you the skills and expertise needed to succeed in the field.
This is a 4-year Apprenticeship program for Plumbing and Heating/Cooling technicians, recognized and certified by the U.S. Department of Labor/Bureau of Apprenticeship Training (DOT/BAT) and by licensing and code authorities that utilize these standards. This framework ensures apprentices receive standardized, industry-recognized training that aligns with regulatory requirements and supports long-term career progression.
Apprenticeships in Iowa serve as a pathway to licensure and a rewarding career in plumbing, heating, and cooling. This approach offers an alternative to traditional college, letting you earn while you learn and build a solid foundation for long-term success.
PHCC of Iowa is committed to ensuring every student is informed about apprenticeship opportunities and equipped with the knowledge to pursue them effectively. In-person classes are offered in Des Moines, IA, and Cedar Rapids, IA.

More About The Program
All active apprentices, whether online or in-person, must be employed by a current PHCC of Iowa member company in order to participate. This status must be maintained throughout each year of apprenticeship.
Apprenticeship has two components, RTI and OJT, and is a 4 year program. RTI is "Related Technical Instruction" and OJT is "On the Job Training". Apprentices earn 144 in-person hours each year or 156 hours per year in the online program. OJT hours are earned by apprentices through their companies doing their day-to-day job. Currently, 8,000 hours over the course of the apprenticeship training is needed, or roughly 2,000 hours per year.
